Day 1
Book a timed Colosseum ticket well in advance; the standard ticket also covers the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Arrive early, before the heat and the crowds.
There's little shade on the Forum and Palatine — bring water and a hat.
Day 2
Book a Vatican Museums entry time ahead. Highlights: the Raphael Rooms, the Gallery of Maps and the spiral staircase. Photography isn't allowed in the Sistine Chapel, and visitors are asked to stay quiet.
St Peter's dress code is enforced: shoulders and knees covered. If you have the energy, climb the dome.
