RoamerPlanner vs TripIt: Trip Planner or Booking Organizer?

TripIt and RoamerPlanner are often mentioned together, but they do different jobs. TripIt is a booking organizer: forward your confirmation emails and it builds an itinerary for you, and TripIt Pro watches your flights. RoamerPlanner is for planning the trip itself — which sights on which day, where to eat, what to pack — with detailed booking cards you fill in yourself. Many travellers could happily use both.

Quick verdict

Choose TripIt if you travel often, book through many different sites and want your itinerary built automatically from confirmation emails — and especially if you'd value TripIt Pro's real-time flight alerts, gate reminders and alternate-flight help. RoamerPlanner offers none of that.

Choose RoamerPlanner if you want to plan the holiday day by day: attractions, restaurants, shopping stops, notes and packing lists alongside your flights and hotel, in a visual timeline you can share with your travel companions — for free.

Adding bookings: automatic import vs manual detail

TripIt's headline feature is genuinely useful: forward a confirmation email to plans@tripit.com, or connect your inbox, and the flight, hotel, car or train appears in the right trip. RoamerPlanner can't import bookings — you type them in.

What you get in return is a detailed card: airline and flight number, departure and arrival airports, terminal, gate, seat, booking reference and an automatically calculated flight duration; for hotels, check-in and check-out times, room type, the confirmation number and the address in the local language to show a taxi driver. Attach the e-ticket or voucher to the card and it's there at the gate.

Planning the days in between

Bookings are only part of a trip. RoamerPlanner is built for everything around them: the temple you want to see first thing, the market for lunch, the dress code for the rooftop bar, the packing list. Every item sits on a colour-coded day timeline you can rearrange with drag and drop — and you can start before your dates or flights are fixed.

Use both: let TripIt collect your confirmations and watch your flights, and use RoamerPlanner to plan what you'll actually do each day.

Sharing with travel companions

TripIt lets you invite people with view or edit permissions, and Pro's Inner Circle shares every trip automatically with chosen people. In RoamerPlanner, the trip owner shares an invite link; people who join can see the full itinerary and tick off their own checklist items, while editing stays with the owner.

Frequently asked questions

Does RoamerPlanner send flight delay alerts like TripIt Pro?
No. RoamerPlanner stores your flight details but doesn't track flight status. Use your airline's app or TripIt Pro for real-time alerts.
Can RoamerPlanner read my confirmation emails?
No — bookings are added manually. If automatic import is a must, TripIt (or another organizer) is the better choice.
Is TripIt free?
Yes, TripIt has a free version that organises your plans, syncs with your calendar and lets you share trips. TripIt Pro, listed at $49 per year when we checked, adds alerts and extra travel tools.
