Japan in February: Snow, Plum Blossoms and Fewer Crowds

November 2, 2026

Japan in February is one of the better-value times to visit. The New Year rush is over, cherry blossom crowds have not arrived, and flights and hotels in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are often cheaper than in spring. You get snow festivals in Hokkaido, the first plum blossoms in Tokyo and Kyoto, and clear, cold days that are good for sightseeing. This guide covers the weather by region, the dated events for February 2027, the holidays to plan around, and two simple route ideas.

Weather in Japan in February

February is still winter across the country, but the experience varies a lot by region.

  • Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka: cold but usually dry and sunny. Daytime highs are typically around 10°C, with mornings close to freezing. Snow in Tokyo is unusual and rarely lasts. Kyoto feels colder than the numbers because of its basin location.
  • Hokkaido (Sapporo, Otaru, Niseko): proper winter. Temperatures in Sapporo stay below freezing for much of the month and snow is reliable. This is ski season and snow festival season.
  • Tohoku and the Japan Sea coast: heavy snow in many areas, which looks lovely but can delay trains and buses.
  • Okinawa: mild, around 20°C in the day, and the early cherry trees there bloom from late January.

The Japan Meteorological Agency publishes monthly normals for each city if you want exact figures for your route. In practice, pack for cold mornings in the cities and serious cold in the north. Heat packs (kairo) from convenience stores are cheap and useful.

February 2027 dates to know

Snow and light festivals in Hokkaido

  • Sapporo Snow Festival: Thursday 4 to Thursday 11 February 2027, at the Odori, Tsudome and Susukino sites, according to the official festival site. This is the 77th edition. Hotels in Sapporo fill months in advance for festival week, so book early. Our Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 guide covers the sites and planning in detail.
  • Otaru Snow Light Path: Saturday 6 to Saturday 13 February 2027, according to the Otaru Tourism Association. Otaru is about 30 to 40 minutes from Sapporo by JR train, so it pairs easily with the snow festival as an evening trip. Lighting hours had not been published at the time of writing.

Nagasaki Lantern Festival

The Nagasaki Lantern Festival runs from 5 to 21 February 2027, according to Nagasaki City's official tourism site. It marks Lunar New Year with thousands of lanterns across Chinatown and the city centre. It is a good reason to include Kyushu in a February trip, especially if you are also visiting Fukuoka or Hiroshima.

Plum blossom season

Plum (ume) blossoms come before cherry blossoms, usually from mid-February into March in the Tokyo and Kyoto areas. Exact timing depends on the winter temperatures.

  • Kairakuen, Mito: one of Japan's best-known plum gardens, about 70 to 80 minutes from Tokyo by limited express train. The Mito Plum Festival usually runs from mid-February to late March. At the time of writing, the official 2027 dates had not been announced, so check the Mito tourism site before you go.
  • Yushima Tenjin, Tokyo: a central shrine with plum trees and a plum festival usually held from February into early March.
  • Kitano Tenmangu, Kyoto: a shrine known for its plum garden, which opens to visitors during the blossom season.

Setsubun

Setsubun falls on Wednesday 3 February 2027. Temples and shrines hold bean-throwing ceremonies to drive away bad luck, and some bigger events at places like Sensoji in Tokyo draw large crowds. It is not a public holiday, but it is a fun extra if you happen to be in town.

Holidays and crowd periods

February is generally a quieter month, but three things can affect prices and crowds:

  • National Foundation Day, Thursday 11 February 2027. A public holiday. Many people take Friday off for a four-day weekend, so domestic travel spikes.
  • Emperor's Birthday, Tuesday 23 February 2027. Another public holiday. Expect busier trains and sights around Monday 22 and Tuesday 23.
  • Lunar New Year, 6 February 2027. Not a Japanese holiday, but many visitors from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea travel to Japan around this time. Popular spots in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hokkaido can be busier than usual for a week or two.

If you can, avoid starting a Hokkaido trip on the weekend of 6 and 7 February, when the snow festival, Lunar New Year and the Otaru event all overlap.

Is February a good month for a first trip to Japan?

For many first-time visitors, yes. The main sights in Tokyo and Kyoto are open as normal, queues are shorter than in spring and autumn, and the light on clear winter days is good for photos. Mount Fuji is often more visible in winter than in summer because the air is drier.

The downsides are short days (sunset in Tokyo moves from about 5pm at the start of the month to about 5:30pm at the end), cold temples with no heating, and fewer flowers or autumn leaves than the peak seasons. If you have your heart set on cherry blossoms, February is too early except for a few early-blooming varieties. Our cherry blossom 2027 guide explains how to plan for late March and April instead.

Two route ideas for February

Classic route with plum blossoms

A first trip of about a week works well in February with a few tweaks to the usual Tokyo and Kyoto plan.

1. Tokyo, 3 to 4 days: spend mornings outdoors (Asakusa, Meiji Shrine, a day trip to Kamakura or Nikko) and afternoons in museums or shopping areas. Add Yushima Tenjin or a half-day trip to Mito if the plums are out. 2. Kyoto, 2 to 3 days: start early at the big temples. Visit Kitano Tenmangu in the second half of the month. 3. Osaka or Nara, 1 day: easy to add from Kyoto.

The 7-day Japan itinerary follows this outline and is easy to adjust for winter by moving outdoor stops earlier in the day.

Longer route with Hokkaido

With two weeks, you can add a winter section in the north:

1. Sapporo, 2 to 3 days during the snow festival, with an evening in Otaru. 2. Fly to Tokyo, rather than taking the train, to save a day. The flight is about 90 minutes. 3. Tokyo and Kyoto as above, possibly ending in Hiroshima or Nagasaki in the second half of the month for the Lantern Festival.

The 14-day Japan itinerary is a good starting point. Copy it into RoamerPlanner, insert the Hokkaido days at the start, and check the trains and flights between each stop.

Practical tips for a winter trip

  • Pack layers, not one huge coat. Trains, shops and hotels are well heated. A warm mid-layer and a windproof outer jacket are easier to manage than a heavy parka.
  • Shoes with grip for Hokkaido and the Japan Sea side. Pavements in Sapporo can be icy, and slip-on cleats are sold locally.
  • Expect weather delays in the north. Heavy snow can cancel flights and slow trains. Leave a buffer day before an international flight home from Hokkaido.
  • Check ski resort and onsen bookings early if you are visiting Niseko, Furano or similar areas during the festival period.
  • Book festival-week hotels as soon as you can. Sapporo is the tightest, followed by Otaru and Nagasaki during their events.
