Sapporo Snow Festival 2027: Dates and How to Plan

October 25, 2026

Snow sculpture at the Sapporo Snow Festival

The Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 has official dates. The 77th festival runs for eight days, from Thursday 4 February 2027 through Thursday 11 February 2027, at three sites in the city. Entry to those sites is free. What is not finished yet is the smaller programme: the organiser says detailed 2027 content for the venues will be updated from mid-December 2026, and several pages on the site still describe the 2026 edition underneath the new dates. Plan the week around the dates and the hours that are already posted. Leave paid attractions as a second step.

If Hokkaido is one stop on a longer Japan trip, see 14 days in Japan or 7 days in Japan, and whether the JR Pass is worth it before you buy a rail pass only for this week.

Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 dates and the three sites

The outline was posted on the official site, snowfes.com, on 13 July 2026. The same dates are repeated on the current homepage and in the FAQ.

The three venues, all on the same eight days:

Odori site. Odori Park, from West 1 to West 11, about 1.1 km through the centre of the city. The festival uses the park, so you can walk the sculptures through the day. Illumination runs until 22:00. The July 2026 outline places five large snow sculptures as the centrepieces, with smaller sculptures and winter attractions around them. The block plan in that notice puts winter attractions around block 1, a link to the Sapporo International Art Festival 2027 at block 2, smaller sculptures at blocks 3, 6 and 9, large sculptures at blocks 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10, and the international snow sculpture contest around block 11. Treat the block list as the announced structure. The actual subjects of the large sculptures were not named in that notice.

Tsudome site. Sapporo Community Dome (Tsudome) in Higashi ward, at 885-1 Sakae-machi. Hours are 10:00 to 16:00. Some attraction queues can close earlier if it is crowded. Access is a roughly 15-minute walk from Sakae-machi Station on the Toho subway line, plus a shuttle bus from the station during the festival. The site page says there is no general visitor car park. The page also says the descriptive detail below the 2027 dates is still the 2026 programme and will be refreshed from mid-December 2026. Do not book a specific slide or a specific food stall as if the 2026 map were a promise.

Susukino site. Ice sculptures along Ekimae-dori from South 4 to South 6, in the Susukino entertainment district. You can walk them whenever you are there. Lights stay on until 23:00, and until 22:00 on the final day, 11 February.

The FAQ states that all venues are free to enter. Paid add-ons inside a venue, if they return in 2027, are separate. One example from the 2026 pages is an ice rink project with its own ticket. Those ticket prices are labelled as 2026 information. They are not a 2027 price list. Say the rink price is not officially confirmed for 2027 until the winter update.

A linked event, Sapporo Snow Sports Park 2027, is announced for 12 to 14 February 2027 at Daiwa House Premist Dome, the three days after the festival ends. The July notice gives the dates and the venue name, not a ticket price or a timetable. If you want that weekend as well, keep 12 to 14 February free and check the organiser again in December 2026.

You cannot walk into Odori or Tsudome before the festival opens. The FAQ says both sites are closed to visitors while the last carving and the equipment are finished. Susukino is the exception: ice carving there usually starts about three days early, and you can watch the work. That preview is not a substitute for the Odori sculptures.

Weather you are actually dressing for

February in Sapporo is midwinter. The Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Sapporo station put February at a mean temperature of -2.7°C, an average daily high of 0.4°C, and an average daily low of -6.2°C. Normal precipitation is 91.9 mm. Snow falls on about 25 days in the month, and the normal deepest snow cover is 95 cm. January is slightly colder (mean -3.2°C) with a normal deepest cover of 76 cm, so the festival week is not a thaw. It is a city that functions in snow, with packed pavements, and it is still cold enough that a fashion coat from Tokyo is the wrong tool.

Wind at the park matters more than the number on a forecast app once you are standing still in front of a large sculpture. Waterproof boots with grip, a hat, gloves, and a layer you can vent on the subway are the useful kit. Clear, very cold days and grey, snowy days both happen inside a normal February. Neither is a reason to cancel. Both are a reason to keep Tsudome, which is partly a play site with indoor space, as the bad-weather day rather than as an afterthought at 15:30 when the gate is about to stop taking people.

How the eight days sit on the calendar

4 February 2027 is a Thursday. 11 February 2027 is a Thursday and it is National Foundation Day, a national holiday (Cabinet Office list for 2027). The weekend of 6 and 7 February falls in the middle. The last day is therefore a holiday, not an ordinary Thursday, and domestic travel tends to bunch around it.

A practical reading, without invented crowd counts: Thursday 4 and Friday 5 are the opening weekdays. Saturday and Sunday are the obvious busy pair. Monday 8 to Wednesday 10 are weekdays again. Thursday 11 is a holiday and the last chance, with illumination ending an hour earlier at Susukino. If your dates are flexible, the opening two days are the calmer bet. If you can only come for the weekend, go early in the morning to Odori and do not save Tsudome for late afternoon.

Hotels in central Sapporo, especially within walking distance of Odori, sell out for this week earlier than a normal February. Book the room before you spend time on restaurant lists. New Chitose Airport is the arrival point. The usual link into the city is the JR rapid train to Sapporo Station. Check JR Hokkaido for the timetable on your date, including the last train if you land in the evening, because a missed connection in snow is a taxi queue, not a small delay.

A three-day festival plan

You do not need all eight days. Three days cover the three sites with one spare block if snow slows the airport train. If you keep the plan in RoamerPlanner, put Tsudome on its own day so a late inbound flight does not collide with the 10:00 to 16:00 window.

Day 1, Odori in daylight and after dark. Start at the large-sculpture blocks (4, 5, 7, 8 and 10 in the announced layout) in the morning, before tour groups thicken. Walk west or east through the smaller works in the afternoon rather than trying to photograph every block at once. Leave and warm up. Come back after dusk for the illumination, which runs to 22:00. Sapporo TV Tower stands at the east end of the park if you want a landmark to navigate by. Check whether the observation deck is open. It is not part of the free festival.

Day 2, Tsudome, then Susukino. Be at Tsudome in the morning. The site is the family and snow-play venue, and the FAQ clock stops at 16:00. Take the Toho line to Sakae-machi and use the shuttle or the walk. Do not plan to park. Return to the centre, rest, and walk the Susukino ice sculptures in the evening. Lights there run later than Odori, until 23:00, except on 11 February.

Day 3, the contest block and anything you skipped. Block 11 is the international snow sculpture contest in the announced plan. It is worth a second, slower look. Use the rest of the day on Odori blocks you rushed, or as a buffer if Day 1 was lost to an airport delay. If you are staying for Snow Sports Park, that starts the day after the festival, on 12 February, and its programme was not fully published in the July 2026 outline.

Eating is easy in the centre and in Susukino, with the usual winter caveat that a popular soup shop will have a queue when the park is busiest. You do not need a reservation for every meal. You do need a place to thaw, so pick a hotel or a cafe you can actually get back to without a 40-minute walk in a wind.

What not to assume

Do not assume the 2026 rink prices, stall maps or slide rules are the 2027 ones. The site says so in plain language. Do not assume you can preview Odori the day before opening. Do not assume a national holiday on 11 February means a quiet park. It means the opposite for domestic visitors. Cherry blossom season is a different trip entirely, weeks later. If that is what you wanted, start from cherry blossom 2027 instead of forcing petals into a snow week.

FAQ

Is the Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 free? The official FAQ says all venues are free. Paid extras, if any, will be marked separately. 2026 rink prices should not be copied forward.

What are the hours? Odori: whenever the park is open to the festival, lights until 22:00. Tsudome: 10:00 to 16:00, with some queues closing earlier. Susukino: walk-up, lights until 23:00, until 22:00 on the last day.

When should I book a hotel? As soon as your flights are real. Festival week is not a normal February for central rooms.

Can I visit only Odori? Yes. It is the site most people mean when they say the festival. Tsudome is the one with a hard closing time and a subway ride. Susukino is an easy evening if you are already downtown.
