Seoul in Spring: Weather, Festivals and What to Pack
November 4, 2026

Seoul in spring runs from about late March to May, and it is one of the most popular times to visit the city. Cherry blossoms usually peak in early April, palace gardens turn green, and days get warm enough for long walks along the Han River. The catches are changeable weather, fine dust on some days, and crowds and higher hotel prices during blossom week. This guide covers what each spring month is like, the festivals to plan around, what to pack and how to shape three days in the city.

Seoul in spring, month by month
Late March
Mornings are still cold and evenings can feel wintry. The first blossoms appear on forsythia and magnolia, with cherry trees starting at the very end of the month in warm years. This is a quieter, cheaper time to visit, and a warm coat is still needed.
April
April is the main spring month. Cherry blossoms in Seoul usually peak in the first half of April, and the city's best-known festivals run then. Days are mild and pleasant for walking, but nights are cool and the weather can change from sunny to windy within a day. Hotels near Yeouido, Jamsil and the palace area fill up during peak blossom week.
May
May is warmer and greener, with long, bright evenings. Roses and azaleas replace cherry blossoms. Korea has a cluster of public holidays in early May, including Children's Day on 5 May and Buddha's Birthday, which can move between April and June. Lantern displays around Buddha's Birthday, especially near Jogyesa temple, are a highlight. Domestic travel gets busy on those long weekends.
Spring festivals to plan around
The exact dates are set each year by the organisers, usually a few weeks before the blossom forecast. For reference, in 2026 Seoul's two biggest cherry blossom festivals ran on these dates:
- Yeouido Spring Flower Festival, along Yeouiseo-ro behind the National Assembly: 3 to 7 April 2026. Roads close to traffic during the festival, so arrive by subway at Yeouinaru or National Assembly station.
- Seokchon Lake Cherry Blossom Festival in Songpa, next to Lotte World Tower: 3 to 11 April 2026.
The 2027 dates will follow the blossom forecast, which the Korea Meteorological Administration and private forecasters publish in late winter. Our guide to Seoul cherry blossom 2027 covers the best spots and how to time a trip before the forecast is out.
Other spring events to look for:
- Lotus Lantern Festival around Buddha's Birthday, with a large lantern parade in central Seoul.
- Night openings at the palaces, which run on selected dates in spring and need online booking.
- Han River parks, which host weekend markets and picnics once the weather warms up.

Fine dust and yellow dust
Spring is the season when Seoul gets its worst air quality days. Two different things cause it:
- Fine dust (misemeonji) from local and regional pollution, which can build up on still days.
- Yellow dust (hwangsa) blown in from deserts to the west, which can turn the sky hazy for a day or two, mostly in March and April.
Bad days are not constant, but they happen. Check an air quality app or the Korean weather service each morning. On a poor day, swap a hike or a river walk for museums, markets or shopping, and consider a KF94 mask, sold at every convenience store. This is the main reason to keep your spring plan flexible.
What to pack for Seoul in spring
Spring days can start cold and end warm, so layers work better than one heavy coat.
- Late March to mid April: a light down jacket or warm coat, a sweater, long trousers and a scarf.
- Late April to May: a light jacket, long sleeves for evenings and shoes you can walk in all day.
- Every month: a compact umbrella, sunglasses, sunscreen and a few masks for dusty days.
- Comfortable shoes: Seoul involves a lot of walking, stairs in subway stations and hills in areas like Bukchon.
Pharmacies and convenience stores sell almost anything you forget, so do not overpack.
A three-day plan for Seoul in spring
This plan puts blossom and outdoor sights in the morning, when light is soft and crowds are thinner.
Day 1: Palaces and old Seoul
- Morning: Gyeongbokgung Palace when it opens, then the National Folk Museum inside the grounds.
- Midday: walk through Bukchon Hanok Village, keeping your voice down, as people live there.
- Afternoon: Changdeokgung and its Secret Garden, which needs a timed guided ticket booked ahead.
- Evening: Insadong or Ikseon-dong for dinner.
Day 2: Blossoms and the river
- Morning: Yeouido or Seokchon Lake for cherry blossoms, depending on the year's timing.
- Afternoon: Lotte World Tower and the lake path, or the Han River parks with a rented bike.
- Evening: a Han River ferry or a walk across one of the bridges at sunset.
Day 3: Neighbourhoods and markets
- Morning: Namsan and N Seoul Tower, by cable car or on foot along the blossom-lined Namsan paths.
- Midday: Gwangjang Market for lunch.
- Afternoon: Seongsu or Hongdae for cafes and shops.
- Evening: Myeongdong street food.
If blossom season has passed, swap Day 2 for Seoul Forest and Olympic Park, which are green and calm in May. Our 3 days in Seoul itinerary has the full version, and you can copy it into RoamerPlanner and rearrange days around the weather. For where to stay, see our guide to where to stay in Seoul.
Getting around in spring
The subway is the easiest way to reach almost every blossom spot, and a rechargeable T-money card works on subways, buses and in many convenience stores. On festival weekends, the stations closest to Yeouido and Seokchon Lake get very crowded in the late afternoon, so go in the morning or on a weekday. Taxis are slow near festival areas because of road closures. Renting a bike along the Han River is a good way to see several parks in one afternoon once the weather is mild.
Booking tips for a spring trip
- Book hotels early for blossom week. If you want the first half of April, book as soon as you know your dates. You can usually cancel if the forecast moves.
- Check entry rules. Many nationalities need a K-ETA before flying to Korea unless an exemption applies. Our K-ETA guide explains the current rules.
- Watch the May holidays. Prices and domestic travel rise around Children's Day and Buddha's Birthday.
- Leave one flexible day. Use it for whichever day has the clearest air.
