Ramadan 2027 Travel in Southeast Asia: What Changes in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia

Ramadan 2027 travel in Southeast Asia needs a little planning, but it rarely needs a change of destination. The fasting month is expected to start around 8 February 2027, and Eid al-Fitr, called Hari Raya Puasa or Aidilfitri in Singapore and Malaysia and Lebaran in Indonesia, falls on 10 March 2027. For visitors, the month itself mostly changes eating hours and evening crowds. The days around Eid are the part that moves flights, ferries and hotel prices. This guide covers what changes in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, including Bali, and how to plan around it.

Ramadan 2027 dates and why they are not fixed

Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, so it moves about 11 days earlier each year. The start is confirmed by each country's religious authority shortly before it begins.

  • Singapore: MUIS, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, lists the expected first day of fasting as Monday 8 February 2027. Hari Raya Puasa is a gazetted public holiday on Wednesday 10 March 2027, according to the Ministry of Manpower.
  • Malaysia: Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a public holiday nationwide on 10 and 11 March 2027.
  • Indonesia: the government's joint ministerial decree for 2027 lists Idul Fitri on 10 and 11 March, with extra collective leave days (cuti bersama) on 9, 12 and 15 March. The decree also says the exact Islamic dates will be confirmed later by the Minister of Religious Affairs.

Treat the start of Ramadan as expected rather than fixed, and treat the Eid holidays as the dates to plan around. A one-day shift is possible.

One more overlap to note: Chinese New Year falls on 6 and 7 February 2027, right before Ramadan starts. In Singapore and Malaysia, that weekend and the following Monday are busy and some Chinese-run shops close. Our guides to Lunar New Year 2027 and Chinese New Year in Singapore cover that week.

What changes during the fasting month

Muslims fast from dawn to sunset during Ramadan. For a visitor, most of daily life carries on as normal, with a few changes in rhythm.

  • Daytime food. In Singapore, food is available everywhere at all hours, though some Malay and Muslim-run stalls close during the day or open only in the late afternoon. In Malaysia, many restaurants stay open, especially Chinese and Indian ones and those in malls. In the more conservative parts of Indonesia, some eateries cover their windows during the day. In Bali, which is mostly Hindu, daily life hardly changes.
  • Sunset meals. Iftar, the meal that breaks the fast, happens at sunset. In Singapore that is a little after 7pm in February and March. Restaurants and food courts get busy in the hour before, and roads can be slow as people head home.
  • Ramadan bazaars. Evening food markets open across the region. In Singapore, the Geylang Serai area hosts the largest bazaar, and Kampong Glam around Sultan Mosque is busy every evening. Malaysian cities run bazaars in many neighbourhoods. They are open to everyone and a good way to try local dishes.
  • Mosque visits. Major mosques often keep visiting hours during Ramadan, but times can shift and they may close to tourists around prayer times or iftar. Check the mosque's own notice before you go.

Simple courtesy goes a long way: avoid eating, drinking or smoking in front of people who are clearly fasting in quieter areas, and dress modestly near mosques. Nobody expects visitors to fast.

The Eid week: when travel gets harder

The days before and after Eid are some of the busiest travel days of the year in Malaysia and Indonesia, because millions of people go back to their home towns.

Indonesia: mudik

The Lebaran homecoming, called mudik, is the biggest annual travel movement in the country. In the week before 10 March 2027, expect:

  • Domestic flights, trains, ferries and long-distance buses booked out or at high prices.
  • Heavy traffic on Java's main roads and at ferry ports, including the Java to Bali crossing at Gilimanuk and Ketapang.
  • Government offices closed across the cuti bersama days, from 9 to 15 March.

Jakarta becomes noticeably quieter during the holiday itself, and its roads empty out. Return traffic peaks in the days after.

Malaysia: balik kampung

Malaysians make a similar trip home. Highways out of Kuala Lumpur jam up before the holiday, and buses and trains to the east coast and the north sell out. Many small businesses close for several days. Kuala Lumpur's malls and big hotels stay open, and the city can feel calm during the holiday.

Singapore

Singapore has a single public holiday on 10 March 2027. Shops, transport and attractions run normally. Causeway crossings to Johor Bahru are often very slow around the Malaysian holiday, so avoid a day trip by road that week.

Bali during Ramadan 2027 and Nyepi

Bali is mostly Hindu, so Ramadan itself barely changes a trip. Two things still matter in March 2027:

1. Nyepi falls on Monday 8 March 2027, two days before Eid. Bali's airport has closed for the full day of silence in recent years, and visitors must stay inside their hotels. See our guide to Nyepi 2027 before you book. 2. Domestic visitors. Indonesians from other islands travel to Bali for the long weekend, so prices and traffic in the south rise around Lebaran.

Taken together, the period from roughly 6 to 16 March 2027 is a time to book Bali early or move your dates. Our 5 days in Bali itinerary works well either side of it.

How to plan a trip around Ramadan 2027

  • February is usually easy. The first weeks of Ramadan rarely affect visitors beyond meal times. If you can avoid the Chinese New Year weekend at the start, February is a reasonable time to visit.
  • Book Eid week early or avoid it. If you need domestic flights in Indonesia or Malaysia between about 5 and 16 March, book as early as you can.
  • Plan evening meals. Make a dinner reservation at a popular restaurant during the iftar hour, or eat slightly later.
  • Keep one flexible day around Eid in your plan in case a ferry or bus is full.
  • Check opening hours for smaller sights and family-run restaurants, which may close for several days over Eid.

Singapore makes a good base for a February or March trip, since it changes the least. Our 4 days in Singapore itinerary can be copied into RoamerPlanner and adjusted if you want to add a bazaar evening.

Ramadan 2027 travel FAQ

Is it rude to eat in public during Ramadan? Not in tourist areas, malls or restaurants in Singapore, Malaysia or Bali. In quieter neighbourhoods and more conservative parts of Indonesia, it is polite to eat indoors during the day.

Are attractions closed during Ramadan? Almost never for the whole month. Some close or shorten hours on Eid itself and the days after, especially in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Is alcohol still available? In Singapore and Bali, yes, as normal. In Malaysia, it is sold in many restaurants and shops, though some places stop sales during the month. Rules in Indonesia vary by region.

When should I avoid flying in Indonesia? In the week before Lebaran and the few days after it. For 2027, that means roughly 5 to 16 March.
