Seollal Seoul 2027: What Stays Open and How to Plan the Break

Seollal Seoul in 2027 is a four-day break built around one Sunday, and the city does not close as a single switch. The Korea AeroSpace Administration's calendar notice of 29 June 2026 sets Seollal, lunar 1 January, on Sunday 7 February 2027. For workplaces on a five-day week, the same notice calls 6 to 9 February a four-day holiday: Saturday, the new year days, and a substitute holiday on Tuesday. Palaces, museums, trains and restaurants each follow a different rule. Several of the 2027 versions of those rules are not published yet. Below: what is published, and what to leave blank until January.

A normal first look at the city, which you can stretch across this break, is 3 days in Seoul. Where you sleep changes how cold the walk home feels: where to stay in Seoul. Packing for a month that averages near freezing is in Seoul in winter. If you are still choosing between this and Japan, Seoul vs Tokyo is the comparison that is not about the holiday.

Seollal Seoul: the 2027 holiday block

The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute's 2027 calendar table lists the Seollal holiday as 6 to 8 February (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) and a substitute holiday on Tuesday 9 February. That matches the space agency's line that Seollal day itself is the Sunday. People travelling home start leaving before Sunday. The visitor who stays in Seoul is not in that queue.

What tends to shut on the day itself, based on the Korea Tourism Organization's guide for Seollal 2026, is a mix of department stores, restaurants and some museums. The same guide said convenience stores and shops in tourist areas often stay open, and told visitors to check hours rather than assume. That was advice for 2026. Use it as a habit for 2027, not as a promise that a particular Myeongdong shop will unlock its door on Sunday 7 February.

National museums are the clearest "check again" item. In 2026 the tourism office said the National Museum of Korea and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art branches closed on Seollal day and often opened on the other holiday days. The National Palace Museum's site, when checked, still showed a closure dated to that year's Seollal, not a standing rule you can copy onto 7 February 2027. Until each museum posts its 2027 holiday hours, do not build Sunday around an indoor ticket. Build Sunday around places that are outdoors or that have published winter hours you can verify the week before.

Palaces: published winter hours, unconfirmed free entry

Gyeongbokgung's own page lists January and February hours as 09:00 to 17:00, last admission at 16:00, closed on Tuesdays. Adults aged 19 to 64 are 3,000 won. Ages 7 to 18 are 1,500 won. Children 6 and under, and visitors 65 and over, are free on that page. A combination ticket covering Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung (including the Secret Garden), Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung and Jongmyo is listed at 10,000 won for adults and 5,000 won for youth, for one admission each within three months.

For Seollal 2026, the tourism office said the four grand palaces, Jongmyo and the Joseon royal tombs were free across the holiday, and closed on the day after the holiday block. That free entry is not officially confirmed for 2027. Pay the published fee, or wait for the notice, but do not arrive assuming the gate is free.

Tuesday 9 February is the awkward day. It is the substitute public holiday, and it is also a Tuesday, the regular closed day. A holiday has sometimes overridden a weekly closure, and sometimes it has not. There is no 2027 sentence on the palace site that settles it. Keep Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. If you are still in Seoul on Tuesday, use the morning to recheck the palace site, and have Cheonggyecheon or Namsan ready if the answer is closed.

Trains, flights, and the day not to connect

Korail has not published the 2027 Seollal ticket window. In 2026, tickets for the holiday travel period went on sale in mid-January via Korail Talk, for rail members, with the lines split across several mornings and a payment deadline after the reservation. Seats went quickly. The only safe transfer of that fact to 2027 is: watch Korail in January, join as a member before the window if you will need a seat, and do not invent a sale date.

If your plan is to stay in Seoul, you are on the quiet side of that rush. Intercity platforms will be full of people leaving. The palaces and old neighbourhoods north of the river are often easier than on a normal Saturday. The risk is the return. Tuesday 9 February is when many of those travellers come back. Do not book a late Tuesday train and an Incheon departure the same evening. AREX and airport buses need their own check that week; this article does not have a 2027 airport timetable.

Inside the city, the subway runs on holidays. A Jongno or Insadong base puts Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon and Insadong in walking range, which matters when the temperature is around freezing and you do not want a 40-minute ride back to Gangnam after dark. Gangnam malls may shut on Sunday even if a convenience store on the same street is open. Read the mall, not the district.

Weather you can actually pack for

World Meteorological Organization normals for Seoul, republished in the Japan Meteorological Agency ClimatView table, give February a mean temperature of 0.7°C and 28.1 mm of precipitation. A mean near 1°C means some afternoons a few degrees above freezing and many mornings below it. Snow is possible and not guaranteed. The palace courtyards are stone and wind. Indoor halls are not a substitute for a coat. Gloves you can take off to hold a ticket, and shoes with a sole that grips, are the practical items. The winter packing list covers the same cold for a short city break if you are combining countries.

Three days that do not depend on a museum

Saturday 6 through Monday 8 February is the block that avoids the Tuesday question. The stops below are places, not festival stages. No 2027 folk-game schedule was on an official page in this check, so this plan does not send you to a tug-of-war at a set hour. If a palace notice in January says Sunday is free and open, keep Sunday morning at Gyeongbokgung. If it says closed, swap that morning to Cheonggyecheon and do the palace on Monday.

Day 1, Saturday 6 February. Morning at Gyeongbokgung, at opening, while the winter hours still give you until 17:00 with last entry at 16:00. Afternoon in Bukchon Hanok Village, which sits above the palace and is a walking neighbourhood, not a ticketed park. The lanes are residential. Stay on the public alleys, keep your voice down, and do not treat a doorway as a set. Evening in Insadong, close enough to walk, with the assumption that some shops will already be shut and a convenience store or a small restaurant that posted holiday hours will be the meal. Check before you promise anyone a particular table.

Day 2, Sunday 7 February, Seollal day. Morning outdoors if the museums have not confirmed they are open. Cheonggyecheon is a stream walk through the centre, free, and it does not depend on a palace gate. Afternoon at Namsan Park if you want a view and you can handle the cold on the path. The tower is a separate ticket and a separate queue; the park itself is the plan if the tower is shut or packed. Evening in Myeongdong only as a test of what is open, not as a dinner reservation you cannot move. If the streets are shuttered, eat near your room. Sunday is the day to be flexible, and to be back indoors before you are colder than the plan was worth.

Day 3, Monday 8 February. Morning at Changdeokgung, using the same "confirm the night before" rule as Gyeongbokgung. The Secret Garden is a timed entry inside the palace when it is running; do not assume the holiday adds extra slots. Afternoon at Gwangjang Market if the vendors are there. Market holidays track the vendors, not the tourism brochure, so have Namsan or Insadong as the replacement if the alleys are quiet. Evening is a short walk in Jongno, not a new neighbourhood across the river. Monday is also the day to buy any train ticket you still need for Tuesday, if the sale is already open, before you are standing in a queue that started at breakfast.

Put the palace time, the backup outdoor stop, and your flight or train on one page. RoamerPlanner is enough for that. A Sunday museum that closes should delete one block, not scramble the airport transfer.

Tuesday, if you have it, is a spare day. Recheck the palace. If it is closed, the stream, a cafe that is open, and an early run to the airport are a complete day. Do not sightsee your way into a missed flight. The substitute holiday is real for offices. It is not a promise that the sight you wanted will unlock.

Short answers

What date is Seollal in 2027? Sunday 7 February 2027, in the Korea AeroSpace Administration notice of 29 June 2026. The holiday span on the astronomy institute's table is 6 to 8 February, with Tuesday 9 February as the substitute.

Are the palaces free? They were, for Seollal 2026, according to the tourism office. The 2027 free-entry notice is not out. The published winter fee at Gyeongbokgung is 3,000 won for adults 19 to 64.

Will Gyeongbokgung open on Tuesday 9 February? Not officially confirmed. Tuesdays are the regular closed day. Keep the palace on Saturday, Sunday or Monday until the site says otherwise.

Can you buy KTX tickets now? The 2027 holiday window was not open at this check. In 2026 the sale was in January via Korail Talk. Watch for the announcement rather than guessing the morning.
