Hiroshima and Miyajima Day Trip: A Practical Route

October 30, 2026

Atomic Bomb Dome beside the river in Hiroshima

A Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip only works if you drop one of the three stops people usually stack. The Peace Memorial Museum, Itsukushima Shrine and the Mount Misen ropeway do not all fit once the ferry and the ride back to Hiroshima Station are counted. From a night in Hiroshima, the museum and the shrine fit. The ropeway is the piece to cut. From Kyoto the same morning, even the museum-and-shrine pair is tight, and the early museum slot is already gone by the time the train arrives.

Tickets and clocks worth knowing before you leave

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum charges 200 yen for adults (college age and up), 100 yen for high school students, and nothing for junior high students and younger. Visitors 65 and older pay 100 yen if they show a passport. The building is in Peace Memorial Park at 1-2 Nakajima-cho, Naka-ku, a separate trip from the Shinkansen platforms at Hiroshima Station.

Hours change with the month, and the early and late slots are not walk-up. The museum's English page, checked in the September to November season, describes it this way:

  • March to July, and September to November: ticket counter about 8:30 to 17:30. Online tickets only for 7:30 to 8:30 and for 17:30 to 19:00.
  • August: counter about 8:30 to 18:30. Online tickets for 7:30 to 8:30 and for 18:30 to 20:00. August 5 and 6 run later than a normal August day.
  • December to February: counter about 8:30 to 16:30. Online tickets for 7:30 to 8:30 and for 16:30 to 18:00.

Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Web tickets go on sale 90 days ahead. A web ticket does not guarantee you walk in at the minute printed on it. The museum says it may hold visitors, or cap entry, when the rooms are too full. The site also lists a closure from 15 to 20 February 2027 for an exhibition change. If your date is in that week, the museum is not part of the day.

The Atomic Bomb Dome is outdoors, beside the park, and does not charge admission. It is a short walk from the museum, not a second ticket.

Itsukushima Shrine, on Miyajima, charges 300 yen for adults. The fee schedule published by the island (dated 1 July 2026) pairs that with 200 yen for high school students and 100 yen for elementary and junior high students. A combined ticket with the treasure hall is 500 yen for adults. The gate opens at 6:30 all year. Closing depends on the date:

  • 1 March to 14 October: 18:00
  • 15 October to 30 November: 17:30
  • December: 17:00
  • 6 January to 28 February: 17:30

New Year's first days are set on the day, not on this table. On 30 October the autumn closing of 17:30 applies. High tide and low tide change what you see. At high water the great torii stands in the sea. At low water the bay floor is exposed and people walk out toward the gate. The tide time is not on the ferry timetable. Check a tide table for Miyajima for the date you go, then pick the ferry that matches the water you want. Both states in one day means a long stay on the island, which is the argument for cutting the museum or staying overnight.

The Mount Misen ropeway, same 1 July 2026 sheet, is 1,100 yen one way and 2,000 yen return for an adult. Cars run about 9:00 to 16:00, and the last ride down is 16:30. The sheet says a web reservation is required when the mountain is busy, and the line stops for weather and for maintenance. A free shuttle runs between Momijidani and the ropeway station. Adding the summit to a museum morning is how this day breaks.

Getting from the station to the island

From Hiroshima Station, the JR Sanyo Line toward Iwakuni reaches Miyajimaguchi in about 27 to 28 minutes. The Miyajima tourist association lists the ride at 21.8 km, about 27 minutes, and 410 yen one way. JR West's ferry site says about 28 minutes. Buy the ticket the machine offers that morning if those two pages ever drift apart. The Japan Rail Pass covers this train.

Miyajimaguchi Station is a short walk through the underpass to the passenger terminal. Two ferry companies sail the same 10-minute crossing, about every 15 minutes through the day. Hatsukaichi City lists the adult one-way fare at 200 yen for junior high age and above, and 100 yen for elementary age and below. The city's page and JR West both add the Miyajima visitor tax of 100 yen on the way onto the island. Preschool children are exempt from the tax. Pay the price printed at the pier if an older page still shows 180 yen. The Miyajima tourist site still has a line at 180 yen in one access paragraph, which does not match the city figure.

The Japan Rail Pass is accepted on the JR West Miyajima Ferry. Show the pass and pay the 100 yen visitor tax separately. The pass is not accepted on Miyajima Matsudai Kisen, the other company, which uses the neighboring pier. IC cards such as ICOCA and Suica work at the JR ferry gate. You do not need a reservation for the boat.

JR West's regular timetable, Miyajimaguchi to the island, starts at 6:25 and the last boat is 22:42. The last boat back from the island is 22:14. Departures from Miyajimaguchi between 9:10 and 16:10 are the Great Torii services, which pass close to the gate. The crossing time stays about 10 minutes. Those boats still sail if the tide is low. They do not wait for a photographic tide.

Hiroden's tram also reaches Miyajimaguchi. It takes much longer than the JR train, and the Japan Rail Pass does not cover it. Use it only if you have already decided the ropeway and a late museum slot are both off the list.

Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip from a night in the city

This is the version that fits. Stay in Hiroshima the night before. The Shinkansen arrival, the museum and the island are not all first-time tasks on the same morning.

Morning. Use the 7:30 to 8:30 entry if you bought the web ticket. That slot is online only, and it can sell out. If you miss it, the walk-up counter opens around 8:30. The museum's own short route through the main building is about 30 minutes. A full visit runs longer. Leave an hour, and do not book a timed activity in the half hour after you come out. Walk to the dome while you are already in the park. Both are on the same side of the city, so you are not crossing Hiroshima twice between them.

Late morning, back to Hiroshima Station. The Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi is the faster of the two ways to the pier. If you left the museum around 10:00, you can be on the island before noon, with the shrine still open for hours. 15 October to 30 November the shrine closes at 17:30, so a noon arrival still leaves the afternoon.

Afternoon. Itsukushima Shrine first, while you are fresh and the closing time is still far off. The shopping street (Omotesando) is the walk back toward the ferry, not a separate excursion. Skip the ropeway on this day. The last car down at 16:30 plus the ferry plus the train back to Hiroshima Station will collide with a museum-length morning.

Back to the city. Boats run into the evening, so the shrine's closing time binds before the ferry does. If you are eating in Hiroshima, leave the island while you still have a Sanyo Line train you have actually looked up. The last boat is not a plan. It is a backstop.

Deer on the island take food and paper from bags. Eat away from them. Local notices ask people not to feed them.

If the morning starts in Kyoto or Shin-Osaka

The October 2026 JR timetable (the Kotsu Shimbunsha issue, as carried by Ekitan) shows Nozomi 103 leaving Kyoto at 7:41 and reaching Hiroshima at 9:17, 1 hour 36 minutes. A reserved ordinary seat on that service is listed at 11,940 yen, an unreserved seat at 10,770 yen. Other Nozomi runs that morning are a few minutes either side of that. Hikari takes longer and the reserved seat is cheaper than Nozomi. Train numbers change with the date, so search the day you travel. JR West announced on 16 October 2026 a revision of Nozomi and Mizuho reserved-seat and Green charges. The timetable figures above were still the ones published in the October 2026 book. Read the fare on the ticket screen when you buy.

A 9:17 arrival at Hiroshima Station means the 7:30 museum slot is already over. You then need about half an hour to Miyajimaguchi and 10 minutes on the ferry before you are on the island. That is a late-morning Miyajima, a shrine visit, and a museum only if you turn straight back and still have time. In the September to November season the counter sells walk-up tickets from about 8:30 to 17:30. From 17:30 to 19:00 only a web ticket gets you in, and last entry is 30 minutes before that 19:00 close. Doing the ropeway as well, on a day that started in Kyoto, means skipping the museum or seeing the shrine at a run.

From Shin-Osaka the Shinkansen ride is shorter and the ticket is lower than from Kyoto. The shape of the day does not change: you still arrive too late for the early museum slot if you leave after breakfast. The fare comparison that decides a rail pass, including Kyoto to Hiroshima at 11,940 yen, is in Is the JR Pass worth it in 2026?. One Hiroshima day inside a longer route is also how the 14-day Japan itinerary and the 7-day Japan itinerary usually place this stop. If you put the day into RoamerPlanner, block the museum ticket and the ferry as two items, and leave the ropeway off unless the museum is on a different date.

The honest split for a same-day return to Kyoto is shrine plus either the museum or the ropeway, not all three. Overnight in Hiroshima if the museum matters. The 200 yen ticket is not the scarce part. The early hour and a clear head after it are.
