Golden Week Japan 2027: Dates and How to Avoid the Rush

October 27, 2026

Carp streamers over the Sagami River for Children's Day

Golden Week Japan 2027 is four national holidays with a gap in the middle, not one long public holiday from 29 April to 6 May. The dates are already on the Cabinet Office list and on the National Astronomical Observatory calendar for Reiwa 9. What is not official is the extra day many companies choose to close, the highway congestion forecast, and any claim that Tokyo will still be at cherry-blossom peak. Plan the legal calendar first. Treat the rest as decisions you confirm later.

Golden Week Japan 2027, day by day

The Cabinet Office publishes national holidays under the National Holidays Act. For 2027 it lists:

  • Showa Day, 29 April
  • Constitution Memorial Day, 3 May
  • Greenery Day, 4 May
  • Children's Day, 5 May

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, in the calendar outline announced on 2 February 2026, gives the same four dates. Its Sunday table for 2027 puts Sundays in April on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th, and Sundays in May on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. From that table:

  • 29 April 2027 is a Thursday, and it is a holiday.
  • 30 April is a Friday, and it is not a national holiday.
  • 1 May is a Saturday.
  • 2 May is a Sunday.
  • 3 May is a Monday and a holiday.
  • 4 May is a Tuesday and a holiday.
  • 5 May is a Wednesday and a holiday.
  • 6 May is a Thursday, and it is an ordinary working day.

There is no substitute holiday on 6 May. A substitute holiday appears when a national holiday falls on a Sunday. In this Golden Week, none of the four holidays falls on a Sunday. The sandwiched-weekday rule (a non-holiday with a national holiday on both sides) also does not create an extra day. 30 April has a holiday on one side and a Saturday on the other. 1 and 2 May are the weekend. Nothing in the Cabinet Office 2027 list adds 30 April, 1 May or 6 May as a public holiday.

Compare that with 2026, only as a warning not to copy last year's shape. The Cabinet Office list for 2026 does include 6 May as a holiday, under the substitute-day rule. People who remember "Golden Week runs through the 6th" are remembering a different year. In 2027 the legal block ends on Wednesday 5 May.

The day that looks free and is not

30 April is the day that changes the trip. It is a normal Friday in law. Some employers close it so staff can bridge Showa Day to the weekend. That is a workplace decision. It is not a date you can read off the Cabinet Office table, and a 2027 survey of who will close is not officially confirmed. If your own office, or a Japanese client's office, has not said, assume Friday 30 April is a working day.

That split produces two patterns.

If people work on 30 April, they get Thursday 29 April off, go back to work on Friday, then get Saturday 1 May through Wednesday 5 May off. Travel demand bunches twice: around the single Thursday, and again from Friday night into the Wednesday holiday.

If a workplace does close on 30 April, that person is off from Thursday 29 April through Wednesday 5 May, seven days. Trains and hotels feel that choice even though the law does not require it.

You will not know the mix in autumn 2026. Book as if the busy period is 29 April and 1-5 May, and as if intercity seats on 3 May and on the evening of 5 May are the ones that disappear. Leave 6 May as a travel morning only if you are willing to ride with everyone returning to work. A later train on 6 May is often kinder than the first one. That is a habit of this holiday, not a published 2027 seat map.

What this week is not

It is not the main Somei Yoshino week in Tokyo or Kyoto. Those cities' long-term full-bloom normals fall in late March and early April. By 29 April the typical display is over. Northern Japan can still be in blossom in early May. If sakura is the reason for the trip, use the cherry blossom 2027 Japan window, not this one. Coming in Golden Week "for the cherries" in Tokyo is how people pay peak fares for green trees.

It is also not a good week to add Kyoto as a day trip from Tokyo, or Tokyo as a day trip from Kyoto. The shinkansen still runs. Reserved seats are the constraint. The JR Pass piece answers whether a pass is worth buying at all. For this week the prior question is whether you can get a reserved seat on the train you actually need. A pass without a seat, on 3 May, is a long wait in a station.

Highway congestion forecasts for 2027 have not been published. Expressway operators release those closer to the holiday. Do not quote a "peak hour" from a previous year's poster as if it were next year's. If you must drive, decide after that forecast exists. If you can avoid driving between cities on 2, 3 and 5 May, do that.

Children's Day is 5 May, and carp streamers (koinobori) go up over rivers and outside homes around then. The photograph with this article is the Sagami River display in Sagamihara, a real local event of that kind. It is also a day-trip that loads trains out of Tokyo. It illustrates the holiday. It is not a required stop on an avoid-the-rush plan.

A three-day Tokyo plan that stays put

Use 3, 4 and 5 May as three days on foot in one city. The 5 days in Tokyo itinerary is the wider version. This cut is the holiday version: no day trip that needs a reserved seat you do not hold yet. Sleep in Shinjuku, Shibuya or Asakusa so two of the three days start outside your door. Those areas are laid out in where to stay in Tokyo.

Shinjuku Gyoen is a poor thing to pin this week on until you read May's closed days. The every-day blossom opening ends 24 April. After that, Mondays close, or the next weekday closes when Monday is a holiday. 3 May 2027 is a Monday and a national holiday, and 4 May is also a holiday. Check the posted calendar. Do not build Tuesday around the garden.

Museums often follow a similar Monday rule. If Monday is a holiday they may close Tuesday instead, and Tuesday is also a holiday this year, so the shift can be confusing. Read the exact week on each museum's site. The outdoor places below do not depend on that.

If you are still choosing dates, block 3-5 May in RoamerPlanner as neighbourhood days, and put any Kyoto or Osaka night outside this block, either well before 29 April or from 6 May onward with seats you already hold.

Day 1, Monday 3 May: Shrine and park

Morning at Meiji Jingu. The grounds are the usual free shrine visit, normally open daily from sunrise to sunset. Confirm any rite that restricts a path. Afternoon in Yoyogi Park, which is next door and does not need a ticket. Evening in Shinjuku, on foot. You have not ridden a shinkansen, and you have not queued for a garden that might be shut.

Day 2, Tuesday 4 May: Asakusa, slowly

Morning at Senso-ji. Go when the gates open to the public that morning, not at noon, because this holiday fills Nakamise. Afternoon in Sumida Park, a river walk rather than a checklist of sights. The cherries there are a March and April subject, so do not come for blossom. Come because it is outside and it does not require a reservation. Evening in Asakusa for dinner, then back. Skip a same-day Kamakura plan unless you already have seats and you like crowded carriages. Kamakura is a good trip in a normal week. It is the opposite of this plan.

Day 3, Wednesday 5 May: North of Ueno, then stop

Morning at Yanaka Ginza, a small shopping street that still works as a walk when the big parks are full. Afternoon in Ueno Park. It is public and it will be busy. It is still inside the city you are already in. Evening at Ameya-Yokocho if you want a market lane, then the hotel. Children's Day events will be on. Join one if it is on your route and free. Do not cross the city for a flyer you saw in the morning.

Leave Tokyo on 6 May only after you have looked at that morning's trains, or stay one more night and leave late. The 7-day Japan itinerary and the 14-day Japan itinerary both assume movement between cities. Slide that movement to the edges of Golden Week, not through the middle of it.

What to book, and when

Book the hotel for the nights of 2, 3, 4 and 5 May if you are using this three-day block, and decide your cancellation rule before you celebrate a low rate. Holiday weeks punish non-refundable rooms when a plan changes. No official 2027 hotel tariff exists to quote.

Book shinkansen seats when the railway opens that calendar, for any trip you cannot drop. The 2027 opening day of reservations is not officially confirmed in this article. In recent years the window has been about a month out, which would put early-May seats on sale in early April. Verify on JR East or JR Central when you are ready to buy. Do not buy from a third party a year ahead at a markup on the promise of a train.

Book one indoor timed ticket only after you know that venue is open on your exact holiday date. A closed Monday-or-Tuesday surprise is the usual failure.

Ignore, until they exist: NEXCO's congestion forecast, any Golden Week sale that is not on the seller's own site, and any blossom forecast for Tokyo in this week.

Short answers

What are the Golden Week dates in 2027? 29 April, then 3, 4 and 5 May. All four are national holidays. 30 April and 6 May are not.

Is 30 April a day off? Not in law. Some workplaces close it. That choice is not officially confirmed for 2027.

Is 6 May a holiday? No. In 2026 it was a substitute holiday. In 2027 it is a Thursday back at work.

Where should you be? In one city, with seats only for the arrival and the departure. Tokyo on foot, as above, is the version that does not depend on a reservation you might not get.
