London in Spring: Gardens, Parks and Day Trips
October 28, 2026

London in spring is best planned around Kew, the free parks and one day trip, not around the weather. Kew's blossom is at its best from mid-March to mid-April, and the weekend of 3 and 4 April 2027 is taken by a 10K and a half marathon there. The parks cost nothing, and a day trip only earns the train fare if you pick one castle and book it, not three. It is a coat-on, coat-off season, with showers as well as sun in April, so the weather detail below is for packing, not for choosing dates.
London in spring weather, without the postcard version
Heathrow sits west of the centre. It is the official station with a full public table, and it is close enough for packing. It will not match a sunny corner of St James's Park degree for degree.
March: mean maximum 11.7°C, mean minimum 4.1°C, rainfall 39 mm, about 8.5 days with at least 1 mm, about 124 hours of sun. Mornings are cold. Blossom can start. A warm afternoon is a bonus, not the plan.
April: 15.0°C and 6.0°C, 42 mm, 8.8 wet days, 177 hours of sun. This is the blossom month people mean. It is also a month of showers. The sun total is real and so is the rain. Both can happen on the same Saturday.
May: mean maximum 18.4°C, mean minimum 9.1°C, rainfall 46 mm, about 8.0 wet days, about 207 hours of sun. Evenings are long enough for a park after a museum. You can still get a cold wind off the river.
Air frost is already rare by April at this station (0.8 days in the normal). You are packing for damp and a cool morning, not for snow. A waterproof layer and one warmer mid-layer cover the three months. The same idea, with a colder bias, is in the winter packing list for city breaks. Spring needs fewer heavy pieces and the same shoes.

Kew, and the dates that are actually published
Kew Gardens is the spring trip that is worth crossing London for. The gardens' own blossom note says spring flowers are at their best from mid-March to mid-April, with magnolias earlier in that window and cherry blossom and tulips from late March into early April. Named spots on that page include the Japanese Landscape, the area south of the Palm House, both ends of the Temperate House, and Cherry Walk at the north end of the Temperate House. Magnolia Walk and Magnolia Grove are the earlier show.
That is a horticultural window, not a promise that a given tree will be in flower on 2 April 2027. Blossom moves with the weather. If the week you can travel is only the last week of May, go to Kew for the gardens and the glasshouses, and do not sell it to yourself as cherry season.
Opening times on the Kew website, checked 24 October 2026, are published through the winter window that ends on 3 January 2027 (10:00 to 15:15, last entry 14:30 in that stretch). Spring 2027 daytime hours after that date are not on the page yet. Ticket prices change. Buy them on kew.org when you know the month, and do not treat a winter closing time as the April time.
A few closures are already listed and matter if your dates are early:
- The Waterlily House is closed for renovation until spring 2027.
- Kew Palace, the Pagoda and Queen Charlotte's Cottage were listed as closed from 28 September until spring 2027.
- The Princess of Wales Conservatory is in an orchids period that limits entry, then closed 15 to 19 March 2027 on the planned-closures page.
None of that shuts the outdoor blossom. It does shrink the indoor backup if it rains in the first half of March.
One weekend is already spoken for. Kew lists a 10K on Saturday 3 April 2027 and a half marathon on Sunday 4 April 2027, organised as Kew the Run, starting at the Palm House with entry via Kew Green. If you wanted a quiet blossom walk, choose another day that weekend. If you are running, you already know. Everyone else should assume paths and gates are busier than a normal Sunday.
The practical route is the District line to Kew Gardens station, or a South Western Railway stop at Kew Bridge, then a walk to a gate. Which gate is open can change with works. The planned-closures page has said Lion Gate is weekends-only in parts of the winter. Recheck in the week you go. The visit itself is half a day if you only walk the blossom, and a full day if you add a glasshouse and a meal. Do not bolt Hampton Court onto the same afternoon unless you enjoy rushing both.
Parks that cost nothing
Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens are the central version of the same season. Blossom there is less labelled than at Kew. The Serpentine path is the walk. You do not need a boat hire to use the park.
St James's Park is the small one between Buckingham Palace and Whitehall. It is a good hour, not a destination you cross the city for. The pelicans are a detail, not a plan. Green Park next door is mostly lawn and trees, useful as a route from the palace toward Piccadilly when the pavement is crowded.
Regent's Park is the north-of-centre option, with the lake and, in season, the borders near Queen Mary's Gardens. The London Zoo ticket is separate and not required for the park.
These parks stay open in the rain in the sense that nobody locks the grass. They are miserable in a cold downpour. That is what the museums are for.
The British Museum states that admission to the permanent collection is free, and it asks visitors to book a free timed ticket. Walk-up entry exists and is not guaranteed when the building is full. Special exhibitions are charged. Hours on the visit page move. As checked in October 2026 the museum was listing a 10:00 open and a late-afternoon close. Read the day you go. Bags on wheels are a poor idea. The museum is the clean rain plan for central London, and it is large enough that "an hour indoors" becomes three if you do not pick a gallery in advance.
A three-day shape that matches the season
This is one way to spend three days if spring flowers are the point. It assumes you are not trying to do the Tower, a West End show and Windsor on top. The 4 days in London itinerary covers a broader first trip. Use that if the gardens are a bonus. Use this if they are the reason.
Day 1: Kew
Morning on the District line, at the gate when it opens, toward Cherry Walk and the Temperate House if you are in the late-March to early-April window. If you are in May, start with the Palm House and the outdoor beds instead of hunting petals that have finished.
Afternoon still inside the gardens. The site is big. A second neighbourhood in west London is how the day falls apart. Eat there or bring food. Leaving for a trendy lunch and coming back through the ticket line is a waste of the entry you paid for.
Evening back toward the centre. Richmond town is the nearer drink if your hotel is west. Do not schedule a theatre curtain if the garden exit is still a guess. Spring 2027 closing times are not officially confirmed.
Day 2: Museum, then a park
Morning at the British Museum with a free timed slot, one or two galleries, then out. The building rewards a limit. Rain is the reason to lengthen this morning and shorten the park, not the reason to add a second museum.
Afternoon in Hyde Park from Marble Arch or Lancaster Gate, as far as the Serpentine and back. If the weather is better than the forecast, keep walking into Kensington Gardens.
Late afternoon in St James's Park if your legs still agree, which puts you near Westminster for an early dinner. If they do not, the park will be there on the next trip. You can drop these days into RoamerPlanner and swap Day 2's order when the morning radar is wet.
Day 3: one train, one castle
Morning train to Windsor. Direct services run to Windsor & Eton Central and to Windsor & Eton Riverside from different London terminals. The day's platform is a National Rail question, not something to memorise in October. Leave after breakfast, not at noon.
Late morning and early afternoon at Windsor Castle, on a timed ticket bought from the Royal Collection Trust. Prices and which rooms are open change with royal use. The town is small. The Long Walk is the outdoor piece if the castle visit is shorter than you hoped.

Afternoon train back before the evening peak if you can. A late return plus a show is how a relaxed day becomes a jog through Paddington. If you would rather not do a castle, Hampton Court is the other one-ticket day in the same direction, and it should replace Windsor, not follow it.
Bank holidays pack these trains. In 2027, Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday is 29 March. The early May bank holiday is normally the first Monday in May, which is 3 May 2027, and the spring bank holiday is normally the last Monday in May, which is 31 May 2027. The government has moved a May holiday in some years. Confirm the Monday on gov.uk before you treat a castle visit that day as quiet.
Short FAQ
When is blossom at its best? Kew's own guidance says mid-March to mid-April for spring flowers, and late March to early April for cherry blossom and tulips. The year moves. A cold March pushes it later. There is no Met Office blossom forecast quoted here.
Do you need a car? No. Kew, the central parks, the British Museum and Windsor are all on rail. A car into central London in April is a parking problem, not a shortcut.
Is spring cheaper than summer? Often, outside Easter and the two May bank holidays, and not by a rule you can take to a booking site. Easter 2027 sits at the end of March. If your dates touch 26 to 29 March, book the room as if it were a holiday, because it is.
What if it rains all weekend? Use the British Museum, the National Gallery or Tate on their own published terms, and keep Kew for the driest half-day. This guide has only rechecked the British Museum's free-entry rule. Confirm the others on their sites. Glasshouses help only where they are open. In March 2027 the Princess of Wales Conservatory has published closures.
