Bali in December: Rain, Crowds and Christmas Week

October 25, 2026

Tegallalang rice terraces in Bali

Bali in December comes with two separate problems: rain and holiday crowds. The rainy season is settling in across much of the island, usually as heavy showers rather than a solid week of grey sky. The Christmas holidays fill the same beaches and roads that the rain is falling on, so early December and the week of 24 December behave like different months. Below are the weather and the crowds taken separately, the official 2026 holiday dates (25 December is the national holiday, 24 December a collective leave day), and a four-day plan that can drop a boat without falling apart.

For a longer route, start from 5 days in Bali. Where to sleep is covered in Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu. How this month compares with the dry season is in Bali wet season vs dry season.

Bali in December: rain, then the holiday week

Indonesia's weather agency, BMKG, published a 2026/2027 rainy-season outlook that puts the start later than normal across a large share of the country. In that national note, many seasonal zones begin in November 2026 or December 2026, and the peak is spread across December 2026, January 2027 and February 2027 depending on the zone. It is a seasonal map, not a forecast for a Tuesday in Canggu.

Local reporting of the Bali Climatology Station's September 2026 outlook added a sharper island picture: about 85 percent of Bali's seasonal zones were expected to enter the rainy season during December 2026, with a smaller share starting in late November, and the peak rainfall for most zones forecast in February 2027. Those figures come from coverage of a station infographic, not from a sentence you can read unchanged on the national BMKG page. Use them as a planning signal. Recheck the Info BMKG forecast in the week you travel. A shorter, later wet season, which the station commentary linked to El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, can still mean intense rain when it arrives. "Later" does not mean "dry December".

The day-to-day pattern in a normal December is more useful than a monthly total. Mornings are often bright enough for a temple or a rice terrace. Cloud builds, and a heavy shower arrives in the afternoon or evening. Temperatures stay warm, commonly in the high 20s°C, with humidity that makes a 28°C reading feel heavier than the same number in the dry season. The south coast is not a different climate from Ubud in the way Phuket and Samui are different, but the hills are wetter and the sea is the first plan to be cancelled when swell picks up. Fast boats to the Nusa islands and snorkelling trips are the items to keep optional.

Do not book a December trip on a promise of beach weather every afternoon. Do not cancel one because a seasonal outlook says "rainy season". Book the outdoor sight for the morning, and give the afternoon a roof.

Christmas, New Year, and who else is on the road

The joint ministerial decree on national holidays and collective leave for 2026 (SKB of the Ministers of Religious Affairs, Manpower, and Administrative Reform, signed 19 September 2025) is specific. Friday 25 December 2026 is the national holiday for Christmas. Thursday 24 December 2026 is a collective leave day for Christmas. Collective leave for civil servants reduces annual leave, and private employers apply it under their own rules, so not every worker is off. For people who do get both the leave day and a Saturday-Sunday weekend, the break runs 24 to 27 December 2026.

1 January 2027 falls on a Friday. New Year's Day is a regular national holiday in Indonesia. The collective-leave days around it, if any, belong to the 2027 decree, which was not the document checked here. Treat 1 to 3 January 2027 as a likely long weekend for Monday-to-Friday workers, and treat extra official leave days as not officially confirmed.

Bali's provincial school break has been reported as 21 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. That date range is widely repeated from the provincial education calendar. Confirm it with the provincial office if your plan depends on local family traffic. Australian school holidays also overlap late December, which is why the southern beaches feel fuller than a rain chart alone would suggest. No sourced figure for the rise in hotel rates was found, so none is given here. Rooms in Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu and central Ubud for 24 December through the first days of January go earlier than rooms in the first half of December. If those dates are fixed, book the room first. If you can move, the first two weeks of December buy you the same season with less competition.

Traffic, not rain, is what spoils a Christmas Day transfer between Ubud and the south coast. Avoid changing areas on 24 December and 31 December if you can sleep where you plan to eat that night.

Where the month works, and where it argues with you

Ubud and the inland centre. Rice terraces, temples and markets still function in a shower. You get wet, then you dry off in a cafe. This is the stronger December base if the beach is a bonus rather than the reason for the ticket. Tirta Empul, Goa Gajah and the Sacred Monkey Forest are all short hops from town. Tegallalang is a crowded viewpoint even in the rain. Go at opening if you want the walk more than the swing photos. Jatiluwih is a longer drive and a better landscape if you have a driver and a clear morning.

Seminyak, Canggu and Kuta. The busiest Christmas strip. Beach clubs and sunset spots are the first to look full, and the roads between them crawl on 24 and 31 December. A morning swim can be pleasant. An afternoon storm is normal enough that an indoor backup (a mall such as Beachwalk, a cooking class, a museum) belongs on the same day, not as a vague idea.

Uluwatu. Pura Luhur Uluwatu sits on the cliff and is still worth the trip when the sea is rough, because the view does not require a boat. The temple monkeys are used to visitors and will take glasses and phones. Sunset is the busy slot and also the slot most likely to sit under a rain cloud. Have a morning visit as the serious plan, and treat sunset as optional. Padang Padang and the other coves are swell-dependent. If a boatman or a lifeguard says no, that is the update that matters.

Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. Only with a spare day behind them. December is when departures are cancelled. A prepaid boat on your only free morning is a bad structure. If the crossing is the point of the trip, go in the dry season or hold the ticket as refundable as the operator allows.

A four-day December plan

Four days is enough to see an inland morning pattern and one coast, and short enough that you are not inventing a fifth boat day. Put the transfer and any sea plan as movable blocks in RoamerPlanner so a storm or a traffic jam replaces one block, not the whole trip.

Day 1, Ubud. Morning at Tegallalang Rice Terrace, or Jatiluwih if you would rather spend the hour in the car for a wider view. Afternoon at Ubud Market and Ubud Palace, both in town, so a shower does not strand you. Eat in Ubud. Do not start the day with a beach you will not reach until the rain arrives.

Day 2, temples north of town. Morning at Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring. Late morning at Goa Gajah. Afternoon at the Sacred Monkey Forest, which is in Ubud itself, so you are not racing a storm back from the coast. Carry a rain jacket and keep food in a closed bag at the monkey forest. This day does not need a boat, a cliff, or a reservation beyond transport.

Day 3, move south, with a roof. Morning on Seminyak Beach if the sky is usable. When the cloud builds, switch to Beachwalk or another indoor stop in Kuta rather than insisting on a second beach. Evening in Seminyak only if you are already sleeping nearby. If Day 3 is 24 or 31 December, skip the cross-island drive and stay wherever you woke up.

Day 4, the cliff, with a backup. Morning at Pura Luhur Uluwatu, before the tour-bus wave and before the usual afternoon shower. If the temple is enough, stop. If you need a second stop that still works in rain, GWK Cultural Park is the indoor-outdoor fallback on the southern peninsula, not another cove. Jimbaran Bay is the seafood dinner only when you are already in the south and the evening storm has passed. Do not schedule Jimbaran as a promise.

Drivers are the usual way between these stops. Distances look short and take longer in December traffic, especially in the Canggu to Seminyak corridor after mid-afternoon. A scooter in heavy rain on those roads is a common way to lose the next day to a clinic. If you are not already used to riding here, use a car for this month.

Prices, without invented numbers

Airfare into Ngurah Rai and well-reviewed hotels rise into the Christmas week because demand rises, not because the weather is better. The first half of December is the value end of the same season. Holiday-week minimum stays are common and are set by each property. Read the cancellation line. A non-refundable week that includes two washed-out boat days is the expensive version of December, whatever the nightly rate was.

Restaurants in Ubud and Seminyak mostly stay open through Christmas. A few run set menus on 24 and 25 December and on 31 December. Book those if you care which table you get. Ordinary warungs do not need a plan.

FAQ

Is Bali in December a bad idea? It is a good idea if you like warm rain, morning sightseeing, and you can travel before 20 December or you have already booked the holiday week. It is a poor idea if you need a guaranteed swim every afternoon or a fixed Nusa Penida day.

Will it rain all day? Often no. The usual pattern is a usable morning and a heavy shower later. Some days are wet from breakfast. That is the season.

Is Christmas Day a public holiday? Yes. 25 December 2026 is a national holiday, and 24 December 2026 is an official collective leave day under the 2026 joint decree.

Does Nyepi fall in December? No. In 2026, Nyepi is in March (19 March, with collective leave on 18 March in the same decree). December is not the silence day.
