Tokyo Christmas Illuminations 2026: Dates and Best Areas
October 23, 2026

Tokyo Christmas illuminations 2026 are largely confirmed for the big commercial displays in Roppongi, Midtown and Marunouchi. Most of the branded Christmas programmes end on 25 December. Longer winter lights, especially in office districts, often continue into January or February. If you are planning a late-December or New Year trip, that timing difference matters.
This guide lists official 2026 dates for the main areas, says which displays finish on Christmas Day, and sketches a simple three-evening route. It pairs with the 5 days in Tokyo itinerary.
Tokyo Christmas illuminations 2026: confirmed dates
Dates below come from organiser press pages and venue sites, checked in October 2026.
Roppongi Hills Christmas 2026
- Period: Thursday 5 November 2026 to Friday 25 December 2026
- Organiser: Mori Building (official press release 30 September 2026)
- Highlights: Keyakizaka illumination (about 400 m of trees with an LED display), plus other lights around the Hills, a Christmas market at Ōyane Plaza and a tree at West Walk
- Site: christmas.hills-site.com
Keyakizaka is one of Tokyo's best-known winter walks. Expect crowds on weekend evenings; weekday nights are usually easier.

Midtown Christmas 2026 (Tokyo Midtown, Roppongi)
- Main Christmas programme: Thursday 26 November 2026 to Friday 25 December 2026
- Illumination hours (main garden lights): typically 17:00–23:00 (confirm on the day)
- Bubble / soap-bubble show element: listed through Sunday 20 December 2026 in the Midtown press materials
- "Walkway of Light" (光の散歩道): Thursday 26 November 2026 through Tuesday 23 February 2027 (National Holiday)
- Outdoor ice rink (Ralph Lauren Midtown Ice Rink): Saturday 5 December 2026 to Tuesday 23 February 2027
- Source: Tokyo Midtown Management press PDF, 7 October 2026
Midtown sits a short walk from Roppongi Hills, so many visitors do both in one evening before 25 December. After Christmas Day, the Walkway of Light and the ice rink are the pieces that continue.
Marunouchi Bright Holiday / Marunouchi Illumination 2026
- Marunouchi Bright Holiday (Harry Potter–themed holiday programme): Thursday 12 November 2026 to Friday 25 December 2026 (some content excluded)
- Marunouchi Illumination on Naka-dori: Thursday 12 November 2026 to Sunday 14 February 2027

The champagne-gold lights along Marunouchi Nakadori are the long-running winter classic near Tokyo Station. The Bright Holiday branding covers the tree and themed decorations through Christmas; the street illumination itself is scheduled to run deeper into winter.

Other 2026 listings (secondary)
Round-up sites such as Enjoy Tokyo also list:
- HIBIYA Magic Time Illumination 2026: 12 November 2026 to 28 February 2027 (Tokyo Midtown Hibiya)
- Midtown Yaesu Christmas 2026: 19 November 2026 to 25 December 2026, with "Yaesu Winter Lights" noted into mid-February 2027
- Tokyo Christmas Advent (Ueno area): 6 November 2026 to 25 December 2026 (some zones open later)
Treat round-up pages as pointers; confirm hours on each venue's own site before you go.
What ends on 25 December (and what does not)
Usually finished after Christmas Day 2026: Roppongi Hills Christmas programme, Midtown's main Christmas illuminations and tree programme, Marunouchi Bright Holiday content tied to the Christmas window.
Often still on in January: Marunouchi Illumination on Naka-dori (to 14 February 2027), Midtown Walkway of Light and ice rink (to 23 February 2027), Hibiya Magic Time Illumination (to late February 2027).
If your Japan trip is New Year–focused, do not assume Roppongi Christmas looks the same on 28 December as on 20 December. Plan illumination evenings for mid to late November through 24 December when possible.
Best areas for a first visit
One evening only: Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka, then walk to Tokyo Midtown. Eat nearby and ride the subway home.
Tokyo Station base: Marunouchi Nakadori after dark, Tokyo Station Marunouchi facade, then an early dinner in the station area.
With kids: Midtown garden lights and, from 5 December, the outdoor rink (ticketed; prices on the Midtown site).
Photography: Weeknight starts just after lighting time beat Saturday peak crowds. Tripods may be restricted in busy plazas; follow venue signs.
A simple 3-evening plan (late November to 24 December)
This is a lighting plan, not a full sightseeing itinerary. Fold it into the wider 5 days in Tokyo outline.
Evening 1: Roppongi
- Late afternoon: arrive Roppongi; early dinner nearby.
- After dark: Keyakizaka illumination at Roppongi Hills.
- Optional second stop: walk to Tokyo Midtown garden lights the same night.
Evening 2: Marunouchi and Tokyo Station
- Afternoon: Imperial Palace outer gardens or Ginza (daylight).
- After dark: Marunouchi Illumination on Naka-dori and the station plaza lights.
- Keep the schedule flexible if you also want a Christmas market stall snack.
Evening 3: Second Midtown visit or Hibiya
- If you skipped Midtown on evening 1, go there.
- Or walk Hibiya Magic Time Illumination and combine with a theatre or early night.
For a longer Japan loop, see the 7-day Japan itinerary or 14-day Japan itinerary.
Practical tips
- Free vs paid: Street and garden illuminations listed above are generally free to view. Lounges, rinks, some market food and special decks are paid.
- Weather: December evenings are cold and can be windy. Layers matter; see our winter packing list.
- Trains: Last trains still apply. Build your return around your hotel station.
- Crowds: Expect denser weekends and the week before Christmas.
- New Year overlap: Many shops shift to New Year mode after Christmas. Illumination plans and shrine visits are different goals; see a separate New Year's Eve guide if that is your focus.
When you have flight dates, put illumination evenings on the calendar first (especially anything you care about before 25 December), then fill daylight sightseeing. RoamerPlanner helps keep those evening blocks from colliding with day trips.
