Paris in December: Weather, Lights and a Realistic Day Plan

October 24, 2026

Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris in December

Paris in December comes down to what to book early and which dates to pick. Louvre and Orsay timed tickets sell out in holiday weeks, hotels cost more in the weeks around Christmas and New Year, and many museums close on 25 December and 1 January, so early December is the easier and cheaper part of the month. The lights, department-store windows and Christmas markets are the reason to come, and most of them cost nothing. It is cold, damp and dark by about 5pm, which is why the plan below keeps walking for the middle of the day and saves the lights for after dark. Where the city or an organiser has published 2026 dates, they are used below; where not, the text says so.

Paris in December: weather and daylight

Météo-France normals for Paris-Montsouris (1991-2020) put December around 3.8°C overnight and 8°C by day, with roughly 62 mm of rain across about 11 wet days and little sunshine. Snow that settles in the city is uncommon. The damp and wind along the Seine make it feel colder than the number suggests.

On the winter solstice, 21 December 2026, sunrise is about 08:42 and sunset about 16:56, so you get a little over eight hours of usable daylight. Put outdoor walks between late morning and mid-afternoon. Save the late afternoon for indoor museums or for the illuminations after dark.

Pack a waterproof coat and shoes with grip, and keep gloves in the day bag. Umbrellas help, but a hood is easier in crowds. For layer ideas that also cover London and Seoul, see the winter packing list for city breaks.

Lights and windows

The Champs-Élysées illuminations usually switch on in the second half of November and run into early January. The exact 2026 switch-on date had not been published on the city tourism pages as of October 2026; in 2025 it fell on 16 November. When they are on, they typically run from early evening to midnight, later on Friday and Saturday. Walk from the Arc de Triomphe down toward Place de la Concorde after dusk.

Boulevard Haussmann department stores (Galeries Lafayette, Printemps) open animated windows in early November in a normal year. The giant tree under the Galeries Lafayette dome is free to view from the store. Go soon after opening if you want space to look up; weekend afternoons are packed.

Other lit streets worth a detour: Avenue Montaigne, Place Vendôme and the white lights around Montmartre. None of these need a ticket. Keep your bag zipped in dense tourist zones.

Christmas markets with 2026 dates

Notre-Dame market (confirmed)

The City of Paris lists the Marché de Noël Notre-Dame at Square René-Viviani (near the cathedral, quai de Montebello) from Thursday 26 November to Sunday 27 December 2026. Hours: 10:00-20:00 Monday-Thursday and Sunday; 10:00-21:00 Friday-Saturday. Free entry; about 40 French craft and food stalls. Metro Saint-Michel or Cité. Updated on paris.fr in September 2026.

Paris La Défense (confirmed)

The Paris La Défense Christmas market runs 12 November to 31 December 2026 on the parvis, with the festive "Sommet" area listed into early January 2027 on the organiser's site. Weekday hours are generally around 11:00-21:00, with longer weekend evenings and special rules on 24, 25 and 31 December. It is the largest market by chalet count in the region. Take RER A or metro line 1 to La Défense.

Still to confirm

The big Tuileries Christmas village and several ice rinks often announce later. As of late October 2026, treat third-party dates as unverified. The Grand Palais de Glace rink has been listed in guides for mid-December 2026 to early January 2027; buy only through the official ticket channel when sales open.

Museums and holiday closures

Many Paris museums close on 25 December and 1 January. Some stay open; Jacquemart-André and the Institut du Monde Arabe are often cited as exceptions, but always check the museum's own page for your date. On 24 and 31 December hours can be shortened. The Louvre and Orsay sell out on holiday weeks, so reserve timed entry.

Free or low-cost indoor options when it rains: church interiors (respect services), covered passages (Galerie Vivienne, Passage des Panoramas), and department-store browsing without buying.

A realistic 3-day plan

This plan assumes mid to late December, with markets open and lights on. Swap the La Défense half-day if rain is heavy; the covered mall and metro access make it easier than open gardens.

Day 1: Islands and Notre-Dame market

  • Morning: Île de la Cité and a look at Notre-Dame's exterior (interior rules and queues change; check the cathedral site).
  • Afternoon: Notre-Dame Christmas market at Square René-Viviani, then a short Latin Quarter walk.
  • Evening: Seine-side stroll toward the Louvre lights, or an early dinner and an early night after travel.

Day 2: Right Bank lights

  • Morning: Louvre or Orsay with a timed ticket.
  • Afternoon: Tuileries if any winter event is open; otherwise continue to Place de la Concorde.
  • Evening: Champs-Élysées illuminations from the Arc, then metro home before the last crush.

Day 3: Haussmann and La Défense

  • Morning: Galeries Lafayette windows and dome tree, then a café stop.
  • Afternoon: Metro or RER to La Défense Christmas market.
  • Evening: Return to Montmartre for quieter lights, or stay central for a second pass on the Champs-Élysées.

For a sightseeing-only version without festive stops, use the 3 days in Paris itinerary. You can drop these days into RoamerPlanner and shift museums when a closure hits.

Getting around in the cold

The metro and RER beat walking when sleet starts. Buy a Navigo Easy or the ticket type that fits your length of stay; airport and Disney tickets are separate. Buses are warmer than waiting on exposed bridges, but traffic worsens near the Champs-Élysées after the lights come on. Taxis and ride-hails surge on Friday nights in December.

If you only have energy for one long outdoor evening, make it the Champs-Élysées and leave La Défense for a daytime or early-evening slot when you can duck indoors. The opposite also works: do La Défense when the weather app shows rain at dusk, then keep a shorter central walk for a clearer night.

Food and costs without drama

December menus and vin chaud add up quickly at market stalls. A simple rule: one market snack stop per day, sit-down meals elsewhere. Bakeries and grocery shops stay useful for lunch. Water fountains are less pleasant in the cold; buy a bottle when you see a supermarket.

Hotel rates rise for the weeks around Christmas and New Year. Shoulder days in early December are often easier on the budget and still have lights once the switch-on has happened. Apartment kitchens help if you are staying a week; even a simple breakfast in the flat frees money for one nicer dinner.

For families, alternate a "lights night" with a museum morning so children are not walking in the dark every evening. Soft gloves and spare socks in the day bag solve more problems than an extra scarf.

Short FAQ

Is Paris in December a bad idea for first-timers? No, if you accept short days and dress for rain. It is a poor fit if you want long park picnics or Seine sunset cruises every evening.

Can you see the lights without joining a tour? Yes. The main avenues and squares are public. Tours help with commentary, not with access.

Do Christmas markets need tickets? The Notre-Dame and La Défense markets listed above are free to enter. Rides, skating and some food stalls cost extra elsewhere.
